The car. An Alfa Romeo 179, the Formula One car Alfa Romeo built for the 1980 season. A 3.0-litre 60-degree V12, mounted longitudinally behind the driver, produces 525 hp at 12,300 rpm and drives through a 6-speed gearbox with a twin dry-plate clutch. The car weighs 585 kg, runs on ventilated disc brakes and is finished in red and white.
Race history. The 179 was designed around the ground-effect aerodynamics of the period. Its recorded history begins with Bruno Giacomelli in 1980, whose fifth place at the Argentine Grand Prix was the car's best result; rule changes during the season held it back after that. Vittorio Brambilla drove it at the Italian and Dutch Grands Prix, and Andrea de Cesaris at the Canadian and United States East Grands Prix. In 1981 it served as the team's spare car.
