Built as a Franciscan monastery in 1483 and restored with extraordinary patience, this is one of the Adriatic's most remarkable private houses. It stands at the water's edge of Lopud, a quiet, car-free island a short boat ride from Dubrovnik, wrapped in terraced gardens that step down towards the sea.
The interiors hold their history lightly. Stone walls and beamed ceilings frame a serious collection of Renaissance art and period furniture — including works one would expect to find behind glass rather than above a sofa — while the seating, lighting and bathrooms are quietly contemporary. Five suites sleep ten, and a formal dining room seats twelve for long evenings.
Outside there are shaded terraces for lunch, a plunge pool, an outdoor cinema and massage area, a hammam, and direct access to the water. The rooftop terrace at sunset, glass in hand, is the reason people return.
