Sheldon Chalet may be the most remote luxury house in the world. It stands on a nunatak, a granite outcrop rising from the glacier, at an elevation of 6,000 feet in the Don Sheldon Amphitheatre of Denali National Park, and it is reached by helicopter. The wilderness that surrounds it is on a scale that recalibrates everything else.
The chalet is octagonal, with oversized windows on every face so the mountains are present in every room. Exposed beams radiate from a central fireplace, and 2,000 square feet across two storeys hold five warm, generously dressed bedrooms sleeping ten guests. A sauna, a serious spirits collection and long dinners against the mountain light shape the evenings.
The observatory deck serves as launchpad for helicopter and glacier adventures by day and as the finest imaginable seat for the aurora borealis by night. A full recreation and dining itinerary is arranged around each stay.
